Ian D. Roberts, A Harvest of Hope

This book traces the story of Jesuit education in England from the late eighteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth. Ian Roberts displays painstaking and careful scholarship in demonstrating that Jesuit education during this period did not—contrary to popular belief—concentrate on the sons of the wealthy and the elite (it actually served young men who came from widely varied backgrounds), and in showing that those who attended the Jesuit schools received an education which was redolent of classic Jesuit education, to be sure, but was also very pragmatically aimed at what they would need as minority citizens in Protestant England.

A Harvest of Hope gives a careful, accurate view of what it took to establish and maintain the English Jesuit schools, and of some of the opposition that they faced, sometimes even from the English Catholic hierarchy. Dr. Roberts has made extensive use of primary sources, many of which are heretofore untapped; he has provided a rich mine for historians of education, for students of eighteenth and nineteenth century England, and for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the life and activities of the Catholic Church in that country during this period.
