Joseph de Guibert SJ, The Jesuits: Their Spiritual Doctrine and Practice

This book is widely regarded as the most comprehensive and thorough study of Jesuit spirituality yet to be produced—at once scholarly and inspirational, fully documented and calmly objective. In three parts, it deals with Ignatius’ own spirituality, with the historical development of the Ignatian spiritual heritage within the Society of Jesus, and with Jesuit spirituality in general.

The first part traces the growth of Ignatius’ spiritual outlook, revealing him as one of the outstanding mystics of the Church, and showing his spirituality at work in the Spiritual Exercises. Part II deals with spiritual movements, activities, and controversies in and around the Society from 1556 until the twentieth century, discussing the work of all the major Jesuit spiritual writers. The last part deals with a variety of issues, including doctrine and practice in Jesuit spirituality and service in company with Christ The author was a well-known professor of spirituality at the Gregorian University in Rome.
