More about
Windows on Social Spirituality
CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY is social–it is about how we live our life in
society and has implications for our relationships and for our actions
in the personal, social, political, and religious spheres. Within the
framework of a Christian understanding, the contributors to this book
consider social dimensions of spirituality as part of the response to
the search for a more just world.
Written in readily accessible language, the first part of the book
explores foundational themes such as God, Trinity, Mary, and how these
inform and inspire action for justice. In the second part some
specific ways in which social spirituality impacts on Christian living
are considered. Women and social spirituality, The Spiritual Exercises
of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, volunteering, attitudes towards'and
action for development or care of the environment, are some instances
of the practical application of this understanding of spirituality.
The final essay is a critique of what the author sees as inadequate
approaches to spirituality.
The authors are all practitioners in the field and their experience
and commitment are transparent in what they write. Equally
transparent is their Christian faith - they write persuasively of how
a Christian understanding of the world can motivate, nourish and
sustain our efforts to bring about a more just world.
The contributors include Bill Toner SJ, Aileen Walsh, Jim Corkery
SJ, Peter McVerry SJ, Cathy Molloy, Brian Lennon SJ, Bernadette
Flanagan PBVM, Laurence Murphy SJ, Seamus O'Gorman, Eugene Quinn,
Patricia Higgins, Niamh Gaynor, Seamus Murphy SJ, and the book is
introduced by the Provincial of the Irish Jesuits, Gerry O'Hanlon SJ.
