Gilles Cusson SJ, Biblical Theology and the Spiritual Exercises

Basing his interpretation of St Ignatius’s Exercises chiefly on the biblical experience of salvation (St Paul’s ‘mystery of Christ’), Gilles Cusson draws richly from the most important early and modern commentators on Ignatius’s text, comparing their varying opinions, and aids readers to form their own views.

Part I presents Ignatius’s own experience of God’s working out his plan of salvation, and the saint’s expression of that experience in his book, the Exercises. It speaks of the preëminence of God’s plan of salvation through Christ, the service of the Divine Majesty, and the objective and procedures of the Exercises. Part II shows, for each of the four ‘weeks’ of a retreat, how retreatants, guided by the Exercises while coöperating with God’s grace, can come to a similar experience of Christ as achieving his plan within themselves.

The spiritual riches which the book reveals in the Exercises far exceed those which an individual is likely to absorb in one retreat. Thus the book can repeatedly help to bring further enrichments into one’s spiritual life.
